For routine residential hardscape cleaning, a quality electric machine paired with a correctly rated surface cleaner is the easiest starting point. Higher pressure is not automatically better—excessive force can scar surfaces, remove joint sand, and drive water where it does not belong.

Cleaning units tell a better story
PSI describes pressure; GPM describes water flow. Multiplying the two produces a rough cleaning-units comparison, but even that number does not account for nozzle choice, distance, dwell time, detergent, or a surface cleaner.
- Test an inconspicuous area first.
- Start with a wider fan nozzle and greater distance.
- Keep the tip moving; never concentrate the stream at joints or edges.
- Confirm the surface-cleaner pressure rating matches the machine.
Special caution for pavers
Aggressive spraying can remove joint sand and destabilize the system. Natural stone, concrete pavers, porcelain pavers, clay brick, and sealed surfaces do not all tolerate the same pressure or chemistry.
Follow the paver and sealer manufacturer’s instructions. If joint material is removed, the area may need to dry fully and be re-sanded before it returns to service.

Common questions
Is 3,000 PSI too much for pavers?
It can be when used too close, with a narrow nozzle, or over vulnerable joints and finishes. Technique, flow, tooling, and material condition matter.
Is a surface cleaner worth it?
For larger flat areas it can improve consistency and reduce striping, provided its pressure rating and size match the washer.
